Pollen Substitute / Pollen Patty

Pollen substitute is a feed supplement that is given to bees in place of natural pollen. It is often used during times when there is a shortage of natural pollen, such as during the winter months or when there are few flowering plants available. Pollen substitutes are usually made from a mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, and other nutrients that are necessary for the health and development of bees. They may be fed to bees in a number of different forms, such as a powder, a liquid, or a paste. Pollen substitute is not a replacement for natural pollen, but it can help to ensure that bees receive the nutrients they need to survive and thrive.

To provide pollen patties to bees, you can follow these steps:

  1. Identify the center of the bees’ hive, where the brood (young bees) are being raised.
  2. Use smoke to calm the bees and gently place one or more pollen patties on the top bars in the center of the hive. For larger colonies, you may want to use two or three patties to cover the entire area where the brood are located.
  3. Make sure that the side of the patty with the perforated paper is facing down, so that the bees can access the patty through the holes underneath. Strong colonies will quickly chew through the paper, while weak colonies may benefit from having the bottom paper removed.
  4. Check back in a week and replace any patties that have been consumed. If there are any uneaten patties, move them to the center of the hive.
