Hopelessly Queenless Colonies

A colony without a queen is without eggs, and without young larvae, so there is no chance of rearing a new queen. A queenless colony has the following characteristics:
  • Queen pheromone is absent
  • Worker ovaries can be become activated and they begin to lay only males/drones
  • Hoplessly queenless colony rarely accepts a new introduced queen, but some evidence suggests that shaking bees out of the colony onto new equipment might work, or re-queening with a queen cell.
